Karpenissi Ski - Center:
Located in Velouchi village, alt. 1840 m, the Ski Center is 12 km from Karpenisi. It is one of the most functional and hospitable Ski Centers in Greece and attracts many visitors during the winter. There are 12 ski-jumps of various altitudes and seven ski lifts; three are sliding, three others are aerial two-seaters and the last one is an aerial three-seater. All are of 5150 people service capability per hour. Several modern Ski Schools, Restaurant and Bar and a Ski equipment shop are open at the Ski Center.

General Information:
Amid the fir forests of Roumeli, in the very centre is where Evritania lies, in an area of 2047 km. It borders on Aitoloakarnania, Karditsa, Fthiotida. According to UNESCO Committee research, Evritania is placed fifth in the world and the First in Europe as far as environmental purity is concerned.
Evritania consists of the following municipalities:
Agrafa, Aperantia, Aspropotamos, Viniani, Domnista, Karpenisi, Ktimenia, Potamia, Prousos, Fournas, Fragista.

Karpenisi is the capital of the prefecture, built on the foot of the mountain named Timphristos. It is 960 meters altitude and is 293 km from Athens. The way to Karpenisi is admirable, with many landscape alternations, coming by Sperchios River and going uphill Timphristos Mountain. It is one of the main winter-tourism destinations in Greece and an ideal sally-out location, as one can arrange marvellous excursions to many exciting areas nearby.

Evritania has plenty of historical and religious monuments that represent its course in time, some archaeological findings in a place called "Dolopia", in north-eastern Evritania recall the Thoukididis' ancient testimony about intense war activity there, in 5 BC. During the post Roman years, the area was known for the famous battle with the Aitolians, which took place in 279 BC.

The traditional architectural style in Karpenisi is impressive. Excellent samples of the local architectural style can be seen at the preserved settlements named "Koriskades" and "Fidakia". Well-preserved mansions, Byzantine Churches, schools converted to Museums and bow-shaped bridges are representative of the area's special architectural style.

Museums:

  • National Opposition's Museum in "Koriskades" - On May 1944 the National Committee, which came from the First Free Elections, was set up at the school of the village. Since then, the school is known as a heritage monument and there is a photographic exhibition too. It is 6 km from Karpenissi.
  • Museum of "Biniani" village - On the 10th of March, in 1944 the "Mountain Government" was set up at the school of "Palaia Biniani" village. That was the first government in liberated Greece; Biniani. It is 38 km from Karpenissi
  • Folklore Museum in "Megalo Chorio" - Traditional dresses, household items, pieces of art are kept in this museum. It is 14 km from Karpenissi.
  • Folklore museum in "Agia Triada" village - Traditional dresses, old objects and instruments in this museum. In Chrisostomos Karapiperis' home, there is a library of great interest where the visitor can find 8000 books. It is 35 km from Karpenissi.
  • Folklore and Historical Museum in Domnista - It has a number of old exhibits and photographic archive material. It is 41 km from Karpenissi
  • Folklore Museum in Granitsa - The village's museum dates back to 1970. There are traditional folklore objects along with the famous Papantoniou-Goritsas Library. It is 83 km from Karpenissi.
  • Museum in "Palaio Mikro Chorio" - There is rare photographic material connected to the village's landslide in 1963, photographs and exhibits related to the National Opposition History, items from an old printing house that existed there in the past, traditional dresses and ancient exhibits, ceramics, library. It is 16 km from Karpenissi.
  • Museum in Prousos Convent - An interesting museum with many historical and religious exhibits, such as books of the 15th and 16th century, manuscripts, printed books, a sword that dates back to 1821 and it might have belonged to the hero named Karaiskakis, a lot of vestments, church utensils and icons. It is 33 km from Karpenissi.

Churches - Convents:
A lot of churches and convents of great historical importance and of various architectural styles, where excellent frescos, icons and relics are kept are spread all over Evritania.

A' Church "Agios Dimitrios" in Karpenissi, located on the hill of the same name.
A' Prousos Convent. According to tradition, it was established in 829-842 and is related to the appearance of Our Lady's holy icon from an area named Prousa in Asia Minor in a cave in Evritania. The first fifty years of the 9th century are considered to be the establishing years. Apart from the famous icon, the church and the other buildings, the Convent's clock and the chapel "Agii Pantes" - All Saints-1754), are also remarkable. In the northern part of that chapel the famous "Greek Literacy School" is still kept. A museum with many exhibits such as manuscripts, printed books, a sword dated back to 1821 and possibly belonging to Karaiskakis, the hero, along with old vestments, is within the Convent.
A' Tatarna Convent. This convent has been ruined and rebuilt about four times. Notwithstanding all these destructions, many rare and valuable relics have been saved. There is a library where remarkable printed matter is kept dating back to 1544-1578, which has been published in Vienna, Venice and other European cities. Also the mosaic icon "The King of Glory"(1350) is there too.
A' "Domiani" Convent of Assumption. It is one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments that has contributed a lot to the Greek Nation and Orthodoxy. The church dates back to the 16th century. The day before the Assumption and during the following two days, holy water wells up from the floor, to a 2-metre depth, in the northwestern part of the church.
A' "Saint Leonidis". A church of the early Christian era. It is located in "Klafsi" village and dates back to the 5th century. The church’s floor mosaic is 28 m. long and 18 m. wide, with excellent, decorative colours and pictures. There are an old throne and altar.
A' "Transfiguration of Saviour" Convent in "Bracha" village. It was founded in 1700 and there are excellent Byzantine icons and frescos.
A' "Panagia of Stana". Church in Epiniana-Agrafa. It is built on a rough rock and it is still one of the most remarkable sites in the area called Agrafa.
A' "Transfiguration of Saviour" Convent in eastern Fragista. There are rare Byzantine frescos while the icon-screen is wood-carved and dates back to 1737.
A' "Saint Nikolaos the New from Vounenis" Church in "Kleisto" village. This is where very important and rare relics are kept for over than seven centuries; a silver case in which contains the hand of the Great Apostle Saint Lucas The Evangelist.
A' "Saint Paraskevi" Church in "Bragiana" village (1605). It operated as "Greek Museum of Agrafa", as a local School and as a university where Kosmas Aitolos taught.
A' "Transfiguration of Saviour" Church in Fourna. This is where the "Zoodochos Pigi" the Convent-School's remarkable relics are kept.

Location of natural beauty:
Close to the village of Agrafa there are the ravines Honteika and Tripa Agrafioti that are included in Natura 2000. At Epiniana there is a ravine called Asprorema, which is of great natural beauty and with rare flora and fauna. In Prasia there is an age-old cypress, 35m. tall and with 7m trunk, which is a protected monument of nature. The astonishing and wildly beautiful, famed Ravine of the Cedars is close to Platania, an area where a marvellous plane forest lies. In Mesokomi a magnificent cave with stalagmites and stalactites has been discovered. In Roska there is a significant, well known nature monument; the Pantavrechi ravine with its astonishing waterfalls. Other locations of excellent natural beauty are the Mavri Spilia ravine in Prousos, the Dekatia ravine in Prodromos and Psilo Gefiri in Tornos. Between Raptopoulo and Broubiana there is the ravine of Acheloos River along with Templa bridge, which was constructed in 1904. Finally, at the junction of the rivers Acheloos, Agrafiotis and Megdova there is Lake Kremaston. Into this artificial lake, which was formed in 1965, many villages have been engulfed. It is known as the biggest earth lock in Europe. It is of 4.700.000.000 m3 capacity.
