The Greek mountain paradise
Karpenisi is the capital in the Prefecture of Evritania
and is 273 km from Athens. It is at the foot of Mt. Timphristos
Mountain and in a fir tree environment. The route to Karpenisi
is marvellous as the landscape varies from that of the plain – by the
Sperchios River - to that of the mountain at Timphristos Village. One of the
ideal winter vacation destinations in Greece and a base for
excursions to many beautiful locations.
According to the ancient Greek poet Homer’s testimony, Evritania was
inhabited from very early times. It has been suggested that the capital of
ancient Evritania was Ichalia, a city that the location of is still unknown. The
most acceptable interpretation of the name Evritania is that of the first
King in Evritania whose name was Evritos. It is believed that Karpenisi,
the capital, was founded during the Byzantine era.
In Evritania there are many religious, historical monuments and locations where
many events have taken place over the centuries. Archaeological findings in
"Dolopia" confirm Thoukididi's testimony about war activity during the
5th century BC in that area, located in the north-eastern part of the
Prefecture.
