History
Penha Longa's location traces its origins back to the 14th century,
when the area known as long rock was first inhabited by Hieronymus community. A
landmark monastery was built on the site, and over the centuries Penha Longa
became a retreat for the Royal Family of Porugal and visiting dignitaries.
Located in the southern hills of the Sintra Mountains, in the National Park, the
Penha Longa Resort property extends over valleys, hills and
rock formations offering a scenery with lush vegetation filled with lakes and
watercourses, making it one of the loveliest areas in Portugal. The
micro-climate of the Sintra Mountains is a result of the Atlantic and
Mediterranean influences full of wild life on the ground and in the air. It is
just 25 km from Lisbon.
